What is a business account?
A business account is a brokerage account owned by a business, like an LLC, S-corporation, or C-corporation, instead of an individual. It gives businesses the same access to stocks, options, and margin as a personal account, but keeps investing activity, taxes, and liability under the business itself.
Can my LLC or corporation open a brokerage account on Public?
Yes. Public supports single-member LLCs, sole-owner S-corporations, and sole-owner C-corporations based in the U.S. To qualify, one individual must serve as the authorized signer, sole beneficial owner, and sole officer of the entity.
What do I need to open a business account at Public?
Just your business’s EIN and basic entity information, plus the sole owner’s personal details, all submitted in the app. Unlike many brokerages, Public doesn’t require articles of incorporation, formation documents, or paper forms.
How is a business account different from a personal brokerage account?
The account is owned and taxed as the business rather than the individual, which keeps trading activity and bookkeeping separate from personal finances. Beyond that, you get the same core investments, margin rates, and tools as a personal Public account.
What can I trade with a business account?
At launch, business accounts support stocks, ETFs, options, index options, bonds, treasuries, margin, investment plans, and full Public API access.
Can I transfer my existing business brokerage account to Public?
Yes, business accounts can be transferred via ACATS. Business transfers are handled partly by our operations team, so they take a bit longer than individual account transfers, but there are no incoming transfer fees.
Can more than one person own a Public business account?
Not yet. This first version supports single-owner entities only. If your entity has two or more owners, you can join the waitlist to be notified when multi-owner support launches.
