Bulls say
James River Group is supported by a focused strategy in the attractive U.S. E&S market, where management still sees positive casualty rate opportunities despite rising competition, social inflation, and elevated loss severity. Since CEO Frank D’Orazio’s arrival in 2021, the company has added stronger underwriting, claims, and ERM leadership, moved to tighter quarterly oversight, and maintained strong employee retention and growing submission activity, which should improve discipline and consistency. In 2Q, the E&S segment generated $250 million of gross written premiums and $137 million of net earned premiums, with a 65.2% accident year loss ratio and only $0.3 million of reserve strengthening, while the shift toward smaller insureds reflects a more selective, higher-quality mix.
Bears say
James River Group is viewed negatively because its latest results showed clear earnings and growth pressure, with adjusted 2Q operating EPS of $0.20 versus $0.24 expected, gross written premiums falling 29% to $269 million, and operating revenue down 8% to $160 million. The combined ratio of 100.2% and a 33.9% expense ratio suggest underwriting and cost discipline are not yet strong enough to offset volatility, while adverse reserve development remains a persistent risk in casualty E&S lines. Investor confidence is further weakened by the shrinking protection on adverse development reinsurance, with only $7.5 million remaining against a roughly $1 billion reserve base, making sustained upside difficult to justify.
