Women invest 40% less than men on average, which means they stand to lose out on as much as $1 million in wealth creation over the course of their lifetimes. Women are also less likely to discuss their finances with their friends, which can lead to missed opportunities in education and the benefit that one can glean from shared perspectives.
These stats are disappointing but not surprising. Historically, the stock market has been a homogenous place that has been made to feel complex and intimidating to people outside of the stereotypical culture. Only 7% of Fortune 500 CEOs are women, and the financial sector has long been dominated by men.
The flip side of this is that women have proven to be incredibly capable investors. Goldman Sachs recently reported that women-led fund managers were outperforming men. Cathie Wood, founder and CEO of Ark Invest, has become a cult icon among investing circles. And earlier this year, Whitney Wolfe-Herd became the youngest woman to ever lead a company to IPO.
