MFA Financial (MFA) Analyst Ratings
Bulls say
MFA Finl is attractive because its book value remains resilient at $12.71 per share, economic book value is $13.20, and recourse leverage of 3.0x still appears manageable while the company repurchases stock at a meaningful discount to intrinsic value. Its credit profile is improving as $200 million of delinquent loans were resolved in the quarter, 60+ day delinquencies fell to 7.0%, and the legacy multi-family book has shrunk to $360 million, or about 2% of the portfolio. The outlook is further supported by Lima One’s $316 million of 2Q originations, better performance in recent vintages, and the ability to lower funding costs through additional securitizations that should help distributable earnings converge toward the dividend over time.
Bears say
MFA Finl is facing weakening profitability as 2Q26 distributable earnings per share of $0.12 missed both the $0.15 estimate and $0.25 consensus, while net interest spread compressed to 1.56% from 1.64% in 1Q and asset yields fell to 5.96%. Its heavier exposure to residential mortgage credit and credit-oriented assets adds meaningful downside from credit losses, prepayment risk, and fair-value markdowns, especially given leverage and securitization reliance that can amplify losses and funding stress. Although reduced interest-rate sensitivity may temper volatility, the business still appears to generate lower ROE than agency-skewed peers and distributable earnings are expected to lag common dividends, supporting a negative fundamental view.
