Essent Group (ESNT) Analyst Ratings
Bulls say
Essent Group is well positioned because its core mortgage insurance franchise continues to deliver strong profitability even with limited growth, as shown by 2Q/2026 EPS of $2.08 versus the $1.76 consensus and $212.6 million of pre-tax income. The outlook is reinforced by benign credit trends, low defaults at 2.53%, elevated reserve strength, and robust capital generation that supported $191 million of share repurchases, $302 million of ordinary dividend capacity, and $1.6 billion of holdco liquidity. In addition, the expanding reinsurance and P&C businesses are adding incremental earnings potential, while management’s estimate increases for 2026 and 2027 reflect confidence in sustained margins and excess capital deployment.
Bears say
Essent Group is facing a weak fundamental setup because reinsurance earnings were only $17.1 million this quarter, with a combined ratio of about 78% overall and likely above 100% in the new reinsurance business, suggesting the segment is not yet generating attractive underwriting economics. The bearish case is reinforced by exposure to a downturn in the U.S. housing market, higher delinquencies, lower cure rates, competitive pressure from the FHA, and PMIERs capital requirements, all of which could pressure premium growth and long-term ROE. Its entry into more volatile property casualty reinsurance adds further earnings uncertainty, while regulatory, credit, and key person risks could also hinder efficient capital deployment and sustain valuation weakness.
