Bumble got its start in late 2014 after Whitney Wolfe left Tinder, where she was a cofounder. Whitney sued Tinder for sexual discrimination.

Former Tinder employee Andrey Andreev, who founded the dating app Badoo, reaches out to Wolfe Herd. Together, they team up to create Bumble, a location-based dating app where women have to make the first move. Andreev invests $10 million and receives 79% ownership, while Wolfe Herd receives 20% ownership and becomes CEO. 

One month after launching, Bumble has about 100,000 downloads, with 60% of matches turning into conversations—it turns out.

Bumble launches BFF mode, as a way for users to find platonic friends, or possibly move their matches to the friend zone. 😏

Bumble partners with Spotify to allow users to show their music interests on their profiles, so users can talk about their favorite bands.

The company launches a career networking app called Bumble Bizz.

Bumble receives a $450 million buyout offer from Match Group—the same company that owns Tinder—but turns it down. 

Two years after its launch, Bumble has more than 22 million users. 

Bumble receives an investment from Indian actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas, who also advises the company on its expansion into India. 

Whitney successfully lobbies the state of Texas to make it illegal to send unwanted lewd photos.
