#researchshort 🦉 Samsara $IOT 🦉 $IOT is an American IoT company headquartered in San Francisco, California. $IOT has additional offices in San Jose, California, Atlanta, and London. $IOT develops a connected operations platform for tracking fleets of vehicles and other equipment. To date, the company has raised $930 million in funding. Co-founders Sanjit Biswas and John Bicket met while graduate students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The pair founded Samsara in 2015 after selling their previous startup, Meraki, to Cisco Systems in 2012. $IOT was initially created to provide wireless sensors, and Andreessen Horowitz became a Series A round early investor. Samsara achieved unicorn status in March 2018 after a funding round led to a valuation of over $1B. Another funding round later that year rose the valuation to $3.6B backed by Andreessen Horowitz and General Catalyst. $IOT expanded internationally and opened an office in London in 2018, which expanded into its European headquarters in 2019. $IOT also expanded their footprint domestically into Midtown Atlanta with a new east coast office location. A Series F funding round saw Samsara's valuation rise to $6.3B with Tiger Global Management and Dragoneer Investment Group joining for the first time. $IOT was impacted during the COVID-19 pandemic which resulted in a reduction to their staff. In February 2021, the startup announced that it had surpassed $300 million in run-rate subscription revenue, serving over 20,000 customers and adding seven new patents. In July, Samsara partnered with $EVGO , a public EV charging network, with the hopes of expediting the electrification process for its commercial fleet customers. -Wiki 🎙️ Interview with Samsara’s chief product officer Kiren Sekar 🎙️ Q: You have been Samsara’s chief product officer since the company’s founding. Can you explain your role? A: “I look after our product management and development teams, and I’ve been with Samsara since its founding. I worked with our founders at their previous company, Meraki, as well, which was acquired by Cisco for $1.2 billion back in 2012. At Samsara, what we’re doing is connecting the world of physical operations to the cloud. So we collect data from our customers’ trucks, of course, but also their heavy equipment, their sites and facilities, their safety data, their mobile apps. We bring it into our cloud and then use our software to help them be safer, more efficient and more sustainable." “We’re working with customers across a wide variety of industries. These industries actually make up 40% of the global gross domestic product and we’re working with tens of thousands of customers across them.” Q: Can you tell us about the first product Samsara launched back in 2015? A: “Our first product was really a prototype that we had built. It was a system that collected different types of data and wirelessly brought it into our cloud, where customers could see where things were on a map, they could see graphs, reports — it was very simple. We actually started by putting it in customers’ commercial refrigerators. We thought, ‘Hey, wireless sensors, we can help understand when the refrigerator’s gonna fail and give them an alert and prevent that spoilage.’ Fairly early on, the people who are the customers, who are testing the products, would try it out and say, ‘This is amazing. I can see the temperature from my phone, but you know, these refrigerators don’t really fail very often. You know where they fail a lot is in our trucks. If the set point isn’t set correctly, if the doors are left open, you know we can have spoilage and that might be spoiling vaccines, that might be destroying a truck full of frozen lobster. Can you help us with that?’ “That’s an example of that customer feedback loop that then led us to discovering fleets, and as we started working with fleets, we then went from not only tracking refrigeration units but also real-time GPS tracking and our driver app that allowed them to digitize their compliance as well as other people processes.” Q: How does Samsara differentiate itself from some of its competition in the Internet of Things and cloud connection marketplace? A: “All of our customers are using legacy technology that really are point solutions. They might have GPS tracking or compliance solutions or a driver safety solution or a different solution to monitor their sites and warehouses. A lot of our customers are saying, ‘Hey, we’re trying to digitally transform our operations. It’s not about just one product and just one piece of data. It’s about having data across our operations we didn’t have before. It’s about making that data easy to analyze, easy to act on.’ That’s where our approach of building a platform that spans many products and use cases in a single system is really differentiated. The customers want outcomes, they don’t want data. They want it to be simple, they want it to be effective and want to say, ‘Here’s how I’m reducing accidents. Here’s how we are improving efficiency. Here’s how we are increasing sustainability.” Q: What prevailing trends do you see with Internet of Things technology and connected operations clouds in the near future? A: “We’re seeing a few key themes. One is more data. Customers are looking at: ‘How do we connect data from more and more of our operations into Samsara?’ and, for example, expanding from their fleets and field assets into their sites, or in the case of their fleets, expanding from GPS tracking to dashcams. We recently introduced a camera connector that allows them to take the side and rear cameras that might already be built into a truck and connect them into our platform. So we’ll continue to see more data and new products that allow our customers to bring data from new parts of their operation into our platform. Second is AI. We are just scratching the surface of what we can do with AI and machine learning to take all this data and turn it into new insights that customers can act on to be safer, but also to be more efficient and be more sustainable." https://www.freightwaves.com/news/inqa-samsara-journies-from-the-cloud-to-the-street

Bonds.
“Bonds” shall refer to corporate debt securities and U.S. government securities offered on the Public platform through a self-directed brokerage account held at Public Investing and custodied at Apex Clearing. For purposes of this section, Bonds exclude treasury securities held in treasury accounts with Jiko Securities, Inc. as explained under the “ Treasury Accounts” section.

Investments in Bonds are subject to various risks including risks related to interest rates, credit quality, market valuations, liquidity, prepayments, early redemption, corporate events, tax ramifications and other factors. The value of Bonds fluctuate and any investments sold prior to maturity may result in gain or loss of principal. In general, when interest rates go up, Bond prices typically drop, and vice versa. Bonds with higher yields or offered by issuers with lower credit ratings generally carry a higher degree of risk. All fixed income securities are subject to price change and availability, and yield is subject to change. Bond ratings, if provided, are third party opinions on the overall bond's credit worthiness at the time the rating is assigned. Ratings are not recommendations to purchase, hold, or sell securities, and they do not address the market value of securities or their suitability for investment purposes.

High-Yield Cash Account.
A High-Yield Cash Account is a secondary brokerage account with Public Investing. Funds in your High-Yield Cash Account are automatically deposited into partner banks (“Partner Banks”), where that cash earns interest and is eligible for FDIC insurance. See here for a list of current Partner Banks. Your Annual Percentage Yield is variable and may change at the discretion of the Partner Banks or Public Investing. Apex Clearing and Public Investing receive administrative fees for operating this program, which reduce the amount of interest paid on swept cash. Neither Public Investing nor any of its affiliates is a bank. Learn more.

Treasury Accounts.
Investing services in treasury accounts offering 6 month US Treasury Bills on the Public platform are through Jiko Securities, Inc. (“JSI”), a registered broker-dealer and member of FINRA & SIPC. See JSI’s FINRA BrokerCheck and Form CRS for further information.

JSI uses funds from your Treasury Account to purchase T-bills in increments of $100 “par value” (the T-bill’s value at maturity). T-bills are purchased at a discount to the par value and the T-bill’s yield represents the difference in price between the “par value” and the “discount price.” Aggregate funds in your Treasury Account in excess of the T-bill purchases will remain in your Treasury Account as cash. The value of T-bills fluctuate and investors may receive more or less than their original investments if sold prior to maturity. T-bills are subject to price change and availability - yield is subject to change. Past performance is not indicative of future performance. Investments in T-bills involve a variety of risks, including credit risk, interest rate risk, and liquidity risk. As a general rule, the price of a T-bills moves inversely to changes in interest rates. Although T-bills are considered safer than many other financial instruments, you could lose all or a part of your investment. See Jiko U.S. Treasuries Risk Disclosures for further details.

Investments in T-bills: Not FDIC Insured; No Bank Guarantee; May Lose Value.

Banking services and bank accounts are offered by Jiko Bank, a division of Mid-Central National Bank.
