As a newish creator in the finance/investing space, I sometimes struggle with imposter syndrome 🤢. I've been investing since 2014, and feel I have a decent grasp on basic investing, but my background is NOT in finance (I'm a pharmacist 💊 by trade). There's a HUGE world 🌎 of trading/investing, and I know I've only barely scratched the surface.
I recently read a post from Ali Abdaal (a physician and YouTuber with over 2 million subscribers) where he discusses feeling imposter syndrome during a podcast interview with Steven Bartlett. Ali writes, "Those of us who suffer from imposter syndrome choose to interpret that feeling as 'I don’t belong here'. Whereas the way Steve now approaches these situations is to think 'I am uncomfortable right now and that’s how it should be, this is how I grow as a person, this is exciting'."
So, to all you new investors out there, I hope this inspires you to keep investing on days when you feel you have no idea what you're doing, or you're frustrated that your investments aren't growing as fast as you'd hoped. On those days, know that YOU BELONG. We are all here, learning right beside you 👩💻. Embrace the discomfort. That's GROWTH 🌱.
We live in an amazing time where anyone can be an investor, not just the wealthy. Take advantage of the wonderful opportunity you have to learn and engage with your peers in this #publiccommunity FOR FREE. Read posts that help you grow, ask questions, TRUST BUT VERIFY, make mistakes, learn from those mistakes, but most importantly, always be moving forward. You won't always win, but as long as you continue to learn and adjust your strategy♟️, you'll be ok.
Remember, green 🟢 or red 🔴, if you're in it for the long haul, you're in it to win it 🏆.
💡Have you ever felt like an imposter? If so, what did you do to overcome it?💡

I am going through that a bit now as well. Sometimes when my videos, posts, tweets, etc. don't get the same amount of views as a previous one I reconsider everything.
It helps me to think very long term and know that if I give up now then I cannot help others like I want to. I also remember it is not about the numbers but about the people you can truly help!

Absolutely!!! When I joined this app I felt like an imposter and was like well no one would want to listen a thing I say!! Then I met you and @ctsshah and some others that also don’t have a finance background who are absolutely killing it!! Y’all helped me realize that most of us have learned on our own which means it’s possible for everyone to learn! 🤩

Have an amazing day @financepillowtalk

@chriss1 absolutely. Transparency is tough, but you don’t owe anything to anyone but yourself. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else. You’re on your own journey ❤️

@brendanschema you are doing so much good, and you’re so young! This is the best time to be taking risks. You got this!

@sydward YOU ARE KILLING IT! And I’ve absolutely loved seeing and being a small part of your journey ❤️

@Realtor_Russ same to you! Enjoy the rest of the weekend

Thank you for the post. I’m a long time investor and can honestly say that feeling seems to linger. But I look at sometimes as a good thing as it keeps me wanting to learn more.

I sabotaged my freelance editing career of 5 years because of imposter syndrome. When I first started editing in my league gaming community it was just me and a couple other editors. Then a bunch of people started editing and they were using 3D visual effects and all the coolest stuff and I got jealous and insecure. Never felt like I was good enough…. So eventually I quit for mental health reasons…See more

@financepillowtalk I feel this way when people want me to guide them. I always say I am no expert. I try to offer resources, and let the asker know that doing their own research is very important. Also the market does not always follow logic. That is a struggle for me. My favorite thing about investing is learning & there is always something new to learn. When I feel imposter syndrome … I dive bac…See more

@financepillowtalk : something that took me a few years of practicing law to learn:
—no one expects you to know everything and to have all the answers
—use this phrase, “that’s a great question, let me look into that and get back to you”
— if you don’t know, don’t make a guess and just try to wing it. You can tank your credibility and people will lose confidence and trust in you.

@GetSlade definitely, keep reaching for the stars ⭐️

@damondamnit agreed! That same feeling keeps pushing me to never stop learning. There’s always room for improvement ❤️

Imposter syndrome is so real! I believe this is what thwarted me from investing originally, feeling so out of place or not a "professional" but I had peers that insisted we all start somewhere. They weren't professionals, just your average Joe is trying to secure a piece of the pie for their own futures. So I made the leap and invested. There are still times I feel "inadequate" but I found it driv…See more

@TIM2030 thanks for sharing your story. Insecurity gets the best of all of us, sometimes. I’m glad you’ve started editing again, and hope you’re in a better mental space now ❤️

@Arkygirl43 the market can be very illogical. Diving back into research is a great strategy.

@mattyteee absolutely agree. Those same tips apply to pharmacy as well. I never “guess” when people’s lives/health are on the line. It’s ok not to know everything. 👏

Reegs@reegs
@mattyteee it's amazing in law, if someone's been doing the same job for 30 years they're STILL learning

@JustBex “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”. Love that quote, and it’s so true. Thanks for sharing a bit of your story. Keep “learning and earning”. ❤️

@reegs there’s just way too much. Substance and procedure. Niches and specialization, sure, but there’s a reason why it’s called a “practice”.
And really, life and finances are really the same. Try to approach things from a point of learning and curiosity because no one has all the answers. Even the professionals.

@financepillowtalk absolutely one thing I’ve learned is, most people want to see you succeed, not fail most people are rooting for you

@mattyteee learning and curiosity take you from good to great💡

@chriss1 spread love > hate and negativity ❤️

@obal82 absolutely! Bring it on! 💪
