According to the project's white paper, Dash seeks to improve upon Bitcoin by providing stronger privacy and faster transactions.

Dash was launched by founder Evan Duffield in January 2014 as a fork of the Bitcoin protocol. It was initially launched under the name XCoin with the currency designation "XCO."

Dash is considered to be the longest-active DAO, aka decentralized autonomous organization, which is an open-source network with no central leadership. These are governed by a set of rules that are written in code and automatically executed without the need for intermediaries.
