Dash, whose name comes from "digital cash," is an open-source blockchain and cryptocurrency focused on offering a fast, cheap global payments network that is decentralized in nature. According to the project's white paper, Dash seeks to improve upon Bitcoin by providing stronger privacy and faster transactions.

Dash was launched by founder Evan Duffield in January 2014 as a fork of the Bitcoin protocol. It was initially launched under the name XCoin with the currency designation "XCO."

Supply is capped at 18,900,000 DASH. Dash uses a block reward system to incentivize miners, masternodes, and future protocol development.

Dash is considered to be the longest-active DAO, aka decentralized autonomous organization, which is an open-source network with no central leadership. These are governed by a set of rules that are written in code and automatically executed without the need for intermediaries.
